Floating Landscapes

Floating Landscapes are a new environmentally exciting enterprise that spur from the joint venture of architects, landscapers and designers. It looks at educating people living by the rivers, canals or lakes to take care and protect the natural banks. Whilst people can visualize designing and landscaping a garden at their door step, this changes drastically when living by the waterside. There is a common assumption that living by the water automatically translates to a sustainable lifestyle. This is not the case, our vision is to help river/boat users to recognize their waters edge as an asset, to invest in the surrounding environment which will in return positively influence the environment and society whilst still increasing the value of their asset.

The UK’s unpredictable weather conditions add drama to our busy lives. A floating landscape outside your floating home will give you the care and comfort for those dreary days. Hampton Riviera designs have in-house landscape architects who live and breath environment. They promote green architecture as part of their everyday work and educate people about the importance of nature as part of your floating buildings.

History

The Swiss Chalet (a listed building) that was prefabricated and shipped from Switzerland in 1882 as a feature for the garden of a house called Riverholm. By the 1920′s the Riverholm house was demolished and replaced with the houses you now see stretching downstream past the weir. The image is from a 1909 postcard and shows the Swiss Chalet and the slipway in a captivating way.

There is a story that the land the chalet was built on, was bequeathed by the Prince of Wales (later Edward VII) in payment for a gambling debt, which seems unlikely. But by 1909 it was called O’Hagan’s boathouse, and Edward did have a Lord-in-Waiting called Maurice Herbert Towneley-O’Hagan, 3rd Baron O’Hagan (1882-1961). So maybe the legend is partly true.  It is also possible O’Hagan was imitating the Swiss Chalet built as a playhouse at Osborne House for Victoria and Albert’s children in 1854.

After a period the Swiss Chalet was used as the boathouse with conjunction of the boatyard for Riverholm until 1996 and was up for sale. It was sold in 2010 and since been restored to its original purpose that is to be part of this luxury Boatyard and Marina. The Boatyard is also a historic site now used privately for special clientele. The surrounding landscape is one of a kind which can only be shared with the few.  The boatyard has a large dry-dock that drains out below the weir downstream and is used for boat maintenance, boat surveying, boat building and refurbishments of specially chosen luxury boats and other structures.

Places of Interest

The magnificent Hampton Court Palace is a few minutes walk from Hampton Riviera. Renowned for being Henry VIII’s favourite royal residence, the palace was built circa1514 for Henry VIII and completed later by Christopher Wren, the same architect of St. Paul’s Cathedral. The Palace has not been inhabited by the British Royal Family since the 18th century but remains a national landmark and a celebrated part of Great Britain’s history.

The Royal Horticultural society hosts the annual Hampton Court Flower Show in Hampton Court Palace itself. Recognized as the largest flower show in the world it is a great event to pick up tips, tricks and equipment. Alternatively you can simply admire the efforts of exhibitors, experts and artists that attend each year.

Around the Hampton Court Palace lies the second largest Royal Park in London, Bushy Park. The park has a very distinctive landscape with an incredible variation of wildlife and habitats within its walls. Shaped mostly by its history as a Royal hunting ground it has a very unique landscape, there are also various ponds and streams that can also be enjoyed. One of the main attractions that Bushy Park possess are the Deer that roam throughout the park both the Red and Fallow variety of Deer can be seen, just as they did when King Henry VIII used to hunt there.
